Eden Reforestation Project, Madagascar

Eden Reforestation Project, Madagascar

We’re proud to support Tree‑Nation’s collaboration with Eden Reforestation Projects in Madagascar, an initiative rooted in community empowerment, ecosystem restoration, and long-term resilience.

Madagascar has lost over 90 percent of its original forests—mangrove estuaries and upland woodlands alike—which has devastated biodiversity and left coastal communities vulnerable. Eden rose to the challenge in 2007, planting over 16 million mangrove and dry forest trees across northwest regions. Since then, the work has scaled dramatically—with communities now planting tens of millions more each year.

What makes this project different is the "Employ‑to‑Plant" model. Rather than bringing in external labor, Eden hires local villagers to collect seeds, operate nurseries, plant trees, and guard new forests. This practice delivers sustainable income in places where poverty is deeply entrenched. With regular wages earned each day, families can provide for basic needs, sustain farms, and keep their children in school.

Environmentally, the results are dramatic. Eden’s teams restore both dry deciduous forests and coastal mangrove belts—ecosystems critical for stabilizing soil, regulating water, and hosting endemic wildlife. With over 25 million trees funded so far, this project is actively rebuilding habitats that sustain biodiversity while buffering climate risks.

For Madagascar, the stakes are high. The island is home to nearly 90 percent endemic species—lemurs, reptiles, plants that exist nowhere else. Deforestation is pushing these into extinction, with tens of thousands of hectares lost just last year alone. But as forest plots grow—and local guardians increase—so does the chance to reclaim what was lost.

By supporting Tree‑Nation, Doorway is doing more than offsetting. We're investing in regenerative systems: we bolster rural incomes, nurture native ecosystems, and protect wildlife threatened by habitat collapse. These trees are more than carbon—they are livelihoods, shelter, and hope.

Moving forward, we’re committed to transparency and impact tracking—from seedlings to mature stands, from soil health to community well‑being. You’ll see quarterly updates from Madagascar field sites as seedlings establish roots and local people reap their rewards.

Our trees in Madagascar stand as a testament to the power of community-driven solutions. And we hope they inspire others to join, plant, and protect where it matters most.
